R Ashwin returns to Chennai, receives hero's welcome

R Ashwin received a hero's welcome at his residence in Chennai on Thursday, 19 December, after returning home from Australia. The off-spinner, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, appeared in high spirits as he was greeted by emotional parents and cheering fans.

Initially, Ashwin declined to address the media at Chennai airport. One reporter asked why he chose not to complete the five-Test series in Australia before announcing his retirement, Ashwin remained tight-lipped. He later spoke to a select group of reporters outside his residence.

Ashwin grew emotional as he addressed the crowd gathered at his residence, reminiscing about a similar reception after India's 2011 World Cup victory. "Thanks to all of you. I didn't expect so many of you to come. I thought I would quietly reach home, but you've all made my day. The last time it was like this was when I returned home after the 2011 World Cup. It brought back those memories," he said.

When asked if he regretted not captaining the senior national team during his illustrious career, Ashwin responded with characteristic humour and candour: "I can't anymore. It's done." He added, "No, I have zero regrets. I have seen so many people with regrets from afar, but I don't want to live my life like that."

"I am laughing; you can see I am happy," he said, expressing excitement about playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ashwin made the surprise announcement on Wednesday, revealing his decision at the Gabba press room shortly after the third Test ended in a draw.

Father alleged humiliation

Meanwhile, R Ashwin’s father Ravichandran has alleged that his son was constantly being humiliated which may have contributed to him announcing his retirement midway through India’s ongoing tour of Australia. While Ravichandran cannot pinpoint the exact reason behind Ashwin ending his India career, he did hint that not getting a regular spot in the playing XI despite his stellar record must have felt like humiliation.
