An Indian Foreign Service officer died by suicide in Delhi's Chanakyapuri neighbourhood Friday morning. Identified as Jitendra Rawat, he jumped off the roof of his government-allotted home - in a colony for External Affairs Ministry officers - at 6 am, said police sources.
The ministry has released a statement confirming the death and asking for privacy. "An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away in the morning of March 7 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family and is in touch with Delhi Police. Further details are not being released, bearing in mind the need to respect the family's privacy in this time of bereavement."
According to a Delhi Police source, "Rawat was troubled for the past few days. No suicide note has been found." He lived on the first floor with his mother, and is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Dehradun. Rawat's mother was at home when he died. He was between 35 and 40 years old, sources said. The cops are investigating the tragic incident.
