Today the Foreign Ministry summoned Nural Islam, Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, to discuss the escalating tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka. On Sunday, the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma following allegations that India was attempting to construct fences at five specific locations along the 4,156-kilometre Indo-Bangladeshi border.
The border tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated after Dhaka alleged that India was trying to construct fences at five locations along the India-Bangladesh border, violating a bilateral agreement. According to Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the conflicts have surfaced in five areas, including (northwestern) Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, and the Tin Bigha Corridor. He criticised the former Sheikh Hasina-led government for signing unequal agreements, which he said contributed to disputes over fencing at 160 sites between 2010 and 2023.
Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, who entered the Bangladesh foreign ministry on Sunday, said after the meeting that Dhaka and New Delhi "have understandings with regard to fencing the border for security".
"Our two border guard enforcements - BSF and BGB (Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh) - have been in communication in this regard. We expect that this understanding will be implemented and there will be a cooperative approach to combating crimes along the border," Verma added.
