Opener Gongadi Trisha scored 44 as India defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the final match of the Women's U19 T20 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Chasing only 83 runs, India did not face much difficulty as they lost just one wicket and went across the line in just 11.2 overs.
India U19 successfully defended the title they won two years earlier under Shafali Verma's captaincy. As the final moment unfolded, the entire team, gathered near the square leg boundary, burst into celebration, sprinting onto the field with joy. Draped in the Indian flag, Indian U-19 women cricketers embraced the title triumph.
India attacked from the start, with Trisha smashing three fours in the first over and three more in the fourth. Reyneke dismissed Kamalini, but India kept pushing. Chalke joined Trisha, playing a stylish cover drive as India cruised past half the target in the powerplay. Trisha was dropped on 38 in the 10th over, but India needed just 15 runs. Chalke sealed the win in the 12th over with a boundary. Trisha, the tournament's top scorer with 309 runs, was named Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament.
Earlier, contributions from the entire bowling unit helped India bundle out South Africa for 82 in 20 overs. Asked to bowl first, India made immediate impact with back-to-back wickets. Indian spinners shared nine wickets amongst them to wreak havoc on a sluggish pitch. The decision to bat first backfired on South Africa, as they struggled against India's spin attack.
Trisha took three wickets while the left-arm spin trio of Parunika Sisodia, Aayushi Shukla, and Vaishnavi Sharma picked up two wickets each to bundle out the Proteas at a meagre total. Vaishnavi’ has now picked 17 wickets, making her the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing tournament.
