There was a second stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj just 2 km away from the spot of the first crowd crush on Wednesday. While the site of the first stampede was Sangam Nose, the second crowd crush took place at Jhusi. The stampede at Sangam Nose made global headlines, but the second stampede at Jhusi remained unreported.
Official sources said the second stampede wasn't spoken about just to prevent panic from spreading at the Maha Kumbh with crores of devotees still at the Kumbh Mela ground and wanting to take a dip. From the site of the stampede at Jhusi, exclusive footage shows piles of clothes, footwear, and bottles being cleared by tractors. Eyewitnesses narrated that they saw people being crushed and bodies being recovered from the site.
The spot in Jhusi is across the Ganga and just 2 km from the site of the first stampede near the Sangam Nose. While the first stampede occurred around 1.30 am, the stampede at Jhusi was around 5.55 am.
Neha Ojha of Jhusi's Haldiram kiosk told The Lallantop, "There were bodies lying here, and no one was asking about them. People who had suffocated to death in the morning were taken away by 1:30 pm. A female police constable arrived after 4 hours of the stampede. Neha Ojha added that Rs 1,80,000 was looted from the cash counter.
Another eyewitness from the Haldiram kiosk, around which the stampede took place, said he saw multiple people being crushed to death. “The police were stopping people from shooting videos."
"When the stampede occurred in Jhusi, there was no reporter present. The issue was never raised anywhere. People only came to know about the stampede at Sangam," said one eyewitness.
VVIP Passes Cancelled, No Vehicles
A day after 30 people died and 60 others sustained injuries in a pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area, the state government has introduced strict measures to prevent further such incidents. The administration has implemented five major changes, including declaring the entire fair area a No-Vehicle Zone and cancellation of VVIP passes.
To further strengthen crowd management efforts, IAS officers Ashish Goyal and Bhanu Goswami have been directed to reach Prayagraj immediately. Both bureaucrats played a key role in successfully managing the 2019 Ardh Kumbh along with Vijay Kiran. Additionally, five special secretary-rank officers with previous experience in handling large-scale events have been assigned to assist with Maha Kumbh operations.
