Two bills that lay down the mechanism to hold simultaneous elections – The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024′ and ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, were formally introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, amid a fiery debate.
The bills, that propose ‘One Nation, One Election’, or simultaneous elections to both Lok Sabha and state assemblies, will now be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed discussions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Lok Sabha that the government was ready to send the One Nation One Election (ONOE) bills to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for a broader consultation, saying it was suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. "When One Nation One Election bills came up in Cabinet, PM Modi said this should be referred to the Joint Committee of Parliament. There should be a detailed discussion over it at every level," said Amit Shah.
Shah's statement came amid an uproar in the Lok Sabha as Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled both bills to enable simultaneous polls. These bills were eventually introduced in the Lok Sabha with 269 voting in favour and 198 against.
The tabling of the bills drew sharp criticism from the opposition, with leaders like Supriya Sule from the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), Congress' Manish Tewari, Trinamool's Kalyan Banerjee, Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav, and DMK's TR Baalu leading the attack.
As the Opposition protested the bills, Law minister Arjun Meghwal said that "objections to the One Nation One Election bill are political in nature". While a total of 32 parties are supporting the One Nation One Election move, 15 others are opposing it. Fence sitters like Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP have also backed the legislation that would enable simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha as well as state assemblies.
