Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi doesn’t hate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Still, he witnesses a “psychological collapse” in him (in Modi) for claiming that he was chosen by God for a purpose and God makes him do things.
At an interaction at Georgetown University in US' Washington DC, Rahul Gandhi has said he doesn't hate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In fact, he empathises with him. He said, "You will be surprised, but I don't actually hate Mr Modi. He has got a point of view, I don't agree with his point of view, but I don't hate him."
At the same time, Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi, claiming he witnessed a "psychological collapse" in the latter during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign. Gandhi recalled an instance when PM Modi claimed on the campaign trail that he was chosen by God for a purpose and that God makes him do things.
"We knew. When he said, 'I speak directly to God,' we knew that we had actually blown him apart. And that the psychology had gone," he said. "People think that, well, this was the Prime Minister sort of saying, 'I'm special, I'm unique, and I talk to God.' But that's not how we saw it. Internally, we saw it as a psychological collapse." Gandhi added,
The Congress leader further explained that PM Modi’s confidence started to unravel as the campaign progressed. “I think early on he realised that this thing's going wrong. We were getting inputs from regular sources...It was pretty clear that they were in trouble,” he said.
According to Gandhi, PM Modi, who previously dominated Gujarat politics without much opposition, struggled to comprehend the challenges he faced in the 2024 election. "Suddenly, this idea started to crack," he remarked.
The Rae Bareli MP further claimed that the ruling NDA coalition had collapsed and was broken "right down the middle."
Gandhi also questioned the fairness of the Lok Sabha elections, claiming that the BJP acted to cripple Congress financially by freezing its bank accounts and that the Election Commission was biased in favour of the ruling party. "I don’t see it as a free election. I see it as a heavily controlled election," Gandhi said. "I don't believe that in a fair election, the BJP would come anywhere near 240 seats. I would be surprised."
The Congress MP launched a series of pointed attacks against the BJP while speaking at various events in the US. During an interaction in Virginia, he remarked upon religious freedom in India, stating that his fight stood for whether Sikhs can wear a turban in the country or not. On Monday, Gandhi also engaged with the members of the Indian community in Dallas, Texas.
