Amid speculations over another former Indian cricketer being elected as the next BCCI president, Rajeev Shukla has all but confirmed the name of the next head of the world’s richest cricket body. The post has been lying vacant ever since World Cup winner Roger Binny had to step down due to the age-cap requirement.
On Sunday, several candidates filed their nominations for the various BCCI posts, including for the president, vice-president, secretary, joint-secretary, treasurer, and IPL governing council chairman.
Speaking to the reporter after filing his nomination for the post of BCCI vice-president, Shukla confirmed that a decision to appoint former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas as the board president has been taken.
“A new body is being made for the next term. Mithun Manhas is a former player, and it was decided to make him the president. Arun Dhumal is the chairman of the IPL governing council, and he will continue in that position," Shukla said on Sunday afternoon in Mumbai.
Manhas is a former Indian domestic cricketer who played and captained Delhi. He played 157 First-Class, 130 List A, and 91 T20s matches in a long domestic career from 1997-98 to 2016-17. He scored 9714 runs in first-class cricket, 4126 runs in List A games, and 1170 runs in T20s.
He represented three different franchises during his IPL career, including Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), now defunct Pune Warriors India and Chennai Super Kings. He played 55 IPL matches and scored 514 runs at a strike rate of 109.36.
Manhas is currently part of a sub-committee that was appointed by the BCCI to run the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association. He has also worked as a coach for various teams, including the Bangladesh men's U19 team, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Gujarat Titans.
The BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on September 28, when the elections for the various office bearers will be held at its headquarters in Mumbai.
Saikia is expected to continue as the board secretary, while Shukla will remain as the vice-president. Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh’s Prabhtej Bhatia is set to become the joint secretary, while former Saurashtra cricketer Jaydev Shah will reportedly be added to the BCCI Apex Council.
