Tahawwur Rana Lands In Delhi

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, India’s most wanted who is accused of plotting the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, landed in India on Thursday at around 2:30 pm, a day after a multi-agency Indian team left from the United States with him on a special flight.

Upon landing, Tahawwur Rana will be formally arrested by the NIA. He will be lodged at the Tihar jail, where all the preparations for his stay have been completed. Heightened security has been put in place around the central prison in view of Rana's extradition.

The 64-year-old terror attack mastermind will undergo trial at a special NIA court in Delhi. Since the case will now be heard in Delhi, he will not be sent to Mumbai. The NIA has also recently obtained a court order to transfer his case from Mumbai to Delhi.

Rana has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder and forgery, and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Treaty Protection

As part of the extradition treaty, India has reportedly given assurances to the US that Rana will not be tortured, will be provided adequate protection in prison, and will only be tried for the offences for which he has been extradited.

Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, Rana was brought to India to face justice after his last-ditch attempt to evade extradition failed as the US Supreme Court rejected his plea.
