Trump Would Be First US President To Win Non-Consecutive Terms In Over A Century

In what is one of the most remarkable comebacks in US presidential history, Republican leader Donald Trump would become the second US President in over a century to secure non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1897.

Donald Trump has emerged as the winner of the US presidential polls in 2024, and will assume the post for the second time. According to The Associated Press, Trump won 277 electoral college votes, crossing the required 270-mark. With this, he defeated his opponent Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, who won 224 electoral college votes.

“We have proven our critics wrong. This is going to be a golden age for America," Trump said in a press conference as he is on the cusp of a second White House term next year. His running mate D Vance also spoke at the event and said, “This is the biggest political comeback in history."

One thing is clear from this year’s elections, Trump’s firebrand style of politics has left an indelible mark on the American political structure. He is set to become the oldest and the first felon president of the United States. Furthermore, the Republican Party has also secured a majority in the US Senate and is leading in the House of Representatives.

Trump would be the oldest president at the time of inauguration and only the second to serve non-consecutive terms. The first US President to win non-consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland, who won his first presidency in 1885 and held the office till 1889. After losing to Benjamin Harrison, Cleveland was elected again to the White House in 1893, and he served till 1897.
