India Bids FarewellTo Manmohan Singh, Last Rites With State Honour

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's last rites were held with full state honours today at the Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi. Several politicians attended the funeral.

Manmohan Singh’s daughter lit his funeral pyre at the crematorium in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, top Congress leaders, and other defence officials. Foreign dignitaries like the King of Bhutan Jigme Wangchuk and the foreign minister of Mauritius were also present. Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur laid a wreath on his body as his family paid their last respects.

Earlier in the day, Singh’s final journey began from the Congress headquarters, where party leaders gathered to pay tribute. A flower-adorned vehicle carried the two-time PM's body in a solemn procession as supporters chanted "Manmohan Singh amar rahe (Manmohan Singh lives forever)".

Hundreds of Congress workers, leaders, and supporters walked alongside the procession as it wended through the national capital. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accompanied Singh’s family on the way.

The mortal remains were taken from his residence to the AICC office at 9 am, where several top Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, paid their last respects.

Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences due to age-related medical complications. He was 92. Considered the architect of India’s economic reforms, Manmohan Singh served as the prime minister for 10 years between 2004 and 2014.
