Seven people were killed and 40 others were injured, including women and children, after a stage collapsed at a Jain Nirvana festival in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat on Tuesday.

The incident happened when a makeshift stage, made out of bamboo and wood, collapsed during a laddu ceremony in Baghpat's Bagaur.

According to police officials, hundreds of devotees reached the spot this morning to offer laddoos to Lord Adinath in the presence of Jain monks.

However, the makeshift stage prepared for the devotees collapsed under their weight, trapping dozens, officials added.

Officials, including senior police officials, rushed to the spot with a large police force to manage the situation. The injured were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment as there were already 108 ambulances present on the spot, according to district authorities.

"This event has been conducted for nearly 30 years. At least 40 people have been injured. They have been admitted to the hospital and are undergoing treatment. Twenty people have already been released after administering first aid," said Baghpat's District Magistrate Asmita Lal.

Wishing speedy recovery to the injured, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed district officials to leave no stones unturned when it came to treating the devotees.
