E-commerce platforms Meesho, Flipkart, and Teeshopper faced backlash for selling t-shirts featuring the image of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The issue came to light when a social media user shared screenshots of the products listed on the platform on X.
In a post on X, Alishan Jafri - a journalist by profession - said that Meesho and other platforms like Teeshopper are selling t-shirts branded with Bishnoi’s face, some even featuring the word “gangster.” He also said that the t-shirts are available for as little as Rs 168 and also include items seemingly for children.
In a series of tweets, Jafri explained what he termed as "online radicalisation" and cited examples to support his argument. As per Meesho's website, the t-shirts are available for sale and are priced from Rs 166 to Rs 177.
The e-commerce platforms are yet to issue a statement addressing the issue.
Lawrence Bishnoi, the jailed gangster, has been booked under India’s anti-terror laws and is linked to over 70 criminal cases. His syndicate has been involved in high-profile crimes, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and issuing threats to Bollywood star Salman Khan. Lawrence is currently under investigation by Mumbai Police for alleged connections to the recent killing of NCP leader Baba Siddique.
