Actor Priya Prakash Varrier, who became an overnight sensation after her wink scene in the 2019 Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love, has been spotted as an extra in one of the songs of Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor's Param Sundari. The Internet was left stunned, questioning why the actor of lead role stature had accepted such a role. A section of the Internet even went on to say that she could have played Janhvi Kapoor's role in the film.
In a video circulating on social media, Priya Varrier is seen in a crowd scene, dressed in a red and white saree, as she silently walks behind lead actor Sidharth Malhotra. The clip quickly drew attention on social media platforms. One fan remarked, "I wonder how no one noticed this."
Fans expressed varied reactions, with some questioning the decision to cast her merely as an extra. Comments on social media included, "Editing can be ruthless, and character cuts are common." Another comment stated, "She deserves better. From viral sensation to background?" Another user wrote, "She would have been better for taking up Jhanvi Kapoor's role. I just can't stand Bollywood!"
Param Sundari has been in the news due to its alleged similarities with Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone's Chennai Express. Janhvi Kapoor has also received flak for her accent in the film from a Malayali actress and an influencer.
The film, directed by Tushar Jalota, features Sidharth Malhotra as Param Sachdev and Janhvi Kapoor as Thekkepattu Sundari Damodharan Pillai. Some fans suggested that Priya Varrier should have been given a more prominent role, with statements like "She would have been better for taking up Janhvi Kapoor's role."
After the release of 'Param Sundari', many Malayalis raised objections to the casting of Janhvi Kapoor as a half-Malayali and half-Tamilian and their representation. Many Malayali content creators alleged that Instagram removed their videos criticising the film. The reviews for the film weren't favourable either.
