Rekha on still appling Sindoor: “It suits me”
Why bollywood veteran actress Rekha sport Sindoor even after her husband Mukesh Aggarwal's death? Her reply is, “Sindoor suits me…it looks rather nice on me.”
Rekha often turns heads with her traditional looks at various industry events. She sported her statement sindoor as well. It has become a part of her look.
Rekha was first seen sporting sindoor outside a film set in 1980, at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor’s wedding. She stunned everyone when she walked into the wedding sporting a sindoor with traditional clothes. Wedding guests, which included Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Kapoor family members, were in for a surprise when they saw her.
She reportedly told the wedding guests that she was sporting the sindoor for a film she was shooting and forgot to remove the sindoor. However, she was frequently spotted with sindoor thereafter. In 1982, Rekha revealed the real reason she continued to sport the sindoor. According to a report in Movie magazine, in June 1982, Rekha was honoured with the Best Actress award for her performance in Umrao Jaan. The then president of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who was honouring her with the National Award, asked Rekha, “Why do you have sindoor in your maang?” Rekha replied, “In the city I come from, it’s fashionable to wear sindoor.”
Rekha was often spotted with the sindoor after she married Mukesh Aggarwal in 1990. However, after his death, Rekha continued to apply sindoor. In 2008, speaking with Hindustan Times, Rekha touched upon the subject again. “I don’t worry about people’s reactions. By the way, I think it looks rather nice on me.. sindoor suits me,” she said, speaking about people’s attention on her sindoor.
