World No.1 Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open men’s singles title after beating second seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the final at the Rod Laver Arena. He overpowered the World No. 2 in emphatic fashion, not allowing a single breakpoint opportunity over the course of the match.
Sinner joins Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic in an elite list of players to have won consecutive Australian Open titles in the 21st century. For Zverev, it is a third Grand Slam final defeat. Zverev, who was looking to become the first German since Boris Becker in 1996 to win a major, was let down by the 45 unforced errors he made. He smashed 12 aces and 25 winners, but they were not enough for him to go past the finish line in the summit clash.
As far as Sinner is concerned, he became the eighth player in the Open Era to win his first three Grand Slam men’s singles finals. Since being involved in the doping scandal, Sinner has won back-to-back Grand Slams, giving an account of his grit and determination. After his dominance on hard courts, Sinner will be looking to show his mettle, first on clay at Roland Garros and then on grass at Wimbledon.
