Photos and videos of women bathing and changing clothes, allegedly at the Mahakumbh, are being shared on social media and Telegram. The extremely spiritual (and vulnerable) moment of bathing in Sangam was secretly recorded from many angles by someone and shared on social media as bait for explicit content.
‘India Today’ Fact Check found photos and videos of women bathing and changing clothes being shared on social media and Telegram. Some of these are being shared as teasers to sell more such images and videos. There’s a deluge of videos of women bathing and changing clothes on river banks all over social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Many of these videos lead people to Telegram, for alleged access to full videos of women bathing.
Some Facebook pages promoting pornographic content are constantly sharing videos of bathing women with captions like “Maha Kumbh Ganga Snan Prayagraj”. Some also use hashtags like #mahakumbh2025, #gangasnan, and #prayagrajkumbh in these posts.
Notably, some of these videos and images shared with trending keywords related to Maha Kumbh, are actually old and not from Prayagraj. However, they are being shared as visuals of the great festival. Some have even created a data bank of such objectionable videos of women bathing and getting dressed on the river banks.
Two Telegram channels offering access to private groups containing secretly recorded videos of women bathing and changing clothes. These videos are being shared in groups with names like “Ganga River open bathing group”, “Hidden bath videos group”, and “Open bath videos group”. According to Telemetrio, a Telegram search engine and analytics platform, there was a significant surge in the search term “open bathing” in India between February 12 to February 18. The charge for accessing these channels ranges from Rs 1,999 to Rs 3,000. During the investigation of this story, some of those Telegram channels were deleted.
As per the rule, applicable to Kumbh and other melas, taking pictures of bathing devotees and Naga Sadhus is strictly banned.
