BJP Faces Setback in West Bengal, Slides to Third Position Amid TMC Dominance and CPM Resurgence
In a surprising turn of events,Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slipped into third positions in most of the constituencies in West Bengal dealing a bodyblow to the party's over ambitious target of reaching 400 mark in the general elections.
Going by a conservative estimate, the party is nowhere in contention batting a lone seat in Cooch Bihar. At Midnapore, citadel of Shuvendu Adhikari, the party might be able to mount a challenge to TMC but it is highly doubtful if such challenge will translate into a meaningful gain. BJP's predicament is easily understood from the fact that CPM had recovered much of its last grounds pushing BJP into a distant third positions.
It is surprising that BJP failed to capitalise on the growing discontent among the public over a slew of scams and the adverse publicity ,this has generated against.TMC. The predicament of BJP can also be gauged from the fact that none of its central leaders are frequenting the state as they did during the last assembly elections. The central leaders have realised the futility of their electoral jaunts in Bengal where traditions of secularism are seeped deep well into psyche of its people. They are visibly refusing to be swayed by hard communalism.
The resurgence of CPM,driven by its educated fireband youth wing, has all but positioned the party into reckoning in many seats. But it may not be able to reap a rich political dividend this election but it will very much cut the BJP into size in majority of the constituencies.
This leaves TMC a net gainer despite cans of misdeeds and scams perpetrated in the last ten years.
Mamta Banerjee might thank her stars that she is not made bite the dust at least in the ensuing lok sabha elections. Of the 42 seats in contention,TMC is likely to sail through, although with a much reduced margin. Congress and CPM combine might gain three to four seats with BJP counting a duck.
