Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced 3 Months Jail In Cheque Bounce Case

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months in jail by a Mumbai court today in connection with a long-standing cheque bounce case. The court’s decision marks the culmination of a legal battle that has been ongoing for several years. A non-bailable warrant has also been issued against him. The director was not present at the hearing.

The Andheri Magistrate court had intially scheduled the verdict for Tuesday (January 21) in the cheque bounce case a day before the filmmaker announced his upcoming film Syndicate. However, RGV chose to give the session a miss. Now, the Telangana Today report claims that after hearing the case for seven years, the Mumbai court has finally issued a non-bailable warrant in his name.

Ram Gopal Varma has been found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. This particular Actpenalises cheque dishonour due to insufficient funds or exceeding the account’s arranged amount’. In addition to the jail sentence, RGV will also have to pay Rs 3.75 lakh to compensate the complainant and if he fails to do so in three months, he will be rewarded with an additional three months imprisonment.

The case stems from a complaint filed by a company named Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra in 2018 against RGV’s firm, alleging that a cheque issued by Varma had bounced due to insufficient funds. In June 2022, the director was granted bail after providing a personal bond as well as a Rs 5000 security deposit. The magistrate clarified there would be no ‘set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure’ as RGV was ‘not in custody during trial’.

After several hearings and legal proceedings, the court ruled against the filmmaker, stating that there was sufficient evidence to prove the allegations.

Varma, known for his groundbreaking films like Satya, Company, and Sarkar, has reacted to this fresh controversy on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account. He wrote, “With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7 year old case of Rs 2 lakh 38 thousand amount , relating to my ex-employee .. My advocates are attending to it. and since the matter is in court i cannot say anything further."
