India’s cricketing stars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, today failed to make an impact with the bat in their Ranji Trophy matches.
Rohit Sharma’s much-anticipated return to domestic cricket, after nearly a decade, was the headline event of Mumbai’s Elite Group A clash against Jammu and Kashmir. However, the excitement quickly turned into disappointment. Opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, the usual partner in India’s international line-up, Rohit managed just 3 runs, while Jaiswal fell for a mere 5. Mumbai’s innings went into a tailspin after their dismissals, raising questions about the team’s reliance on its star players.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant’s return to the Ranji Trophy after six years ended in similar dismay. Representing Delhi in their match against Saurashtra, the star wicketkeeper-batter managed only a solitary run before being dismissed. For a player known for his fearless approach, the outing was far from ideal.
Shubman Gill, another rising star expected to shine, also failed to leave a mark. Playing for Punjab against Karnataka at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, Gill was dismissed for just 4 runs.
The Ranji Trophy was widely seen as an opportunity for India’s elite to find rhythm and form. However, their dismal outings on January 23 have left fans and selectors questioning whether the team’s batting lineup is adequately prepared for upcoming challenges on the international stage. With the Champions Trophy approaching, the Ranji Trophy was expected to serve as a platform for these players to fine-tune their form, but the results fell far short of expectations.
