Seven students were killed and more than 15 were injured after the roof of a primary school building collapsed in Rajasthan's Jhalawar on Friday morning. The incident occurred while the children were attending classes.
The incident at Piplodi Government School in Manohar Thana took place at around 8.30 am. Officials said around 60 children, besides teachers and staff members, were present in the premises when the roof of the single-storey building collapsed.
Rajasthan Education Secretary Krishna Kunal said the rescue operation was over, and seven children were killed in the incident.
According to eyewitnesses and local villagers, the roof suddenly caved in due to persistent heavy rainfall over the past few days. The sound of the collapse was followed by screams and confusion as dust and debris engulfed the area.
"Four children have died and 17 others are injured. Ten children have been referred to Jhalawar, of whom three to four are critical," said Jhalawar Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar. The victims were Class 7 students, aged between 12 and 14 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives and said that all possible assistance is being provided. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also called it a tragic incident, describing it as extremely sad and heartbreaking.
Education Minister Madan Dilawar said that a high-level probe will be initiated into the incident.
