SC grants Bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh

Supreme Court today granted bail to AAP mp Sanjay Singh. The court posed some tough questions to the Enforcement Directorate, which had arrested Mr. Singh. The court asked why he had been imprisoned without a trial for over six months and why the alleged bribe of 2 crores had not been recovered yet.

The court has informed the agency that it has found no trace of the money allegedly received by the AAP as bribes for allotting liquor licenses to the 'South Group'. Despite claims by the agency that the party received 600 crores in bribes, nothing has been recovered so far.

The court instructed Additional Solicitor General SV Raju to discuss with the ED and determine if it is necessary to take Mr. Singh into custody at this point. The Enforcement Directorate declined to take custody, and Mr. Singh was subsequently released.

Sanjay Singh has been detained in Tihar Jail in Delhi since his arrest in October-2023 for his alleged involvement in liquor policy scam. The scam has caused a stir within the opposition party and led to the arrests of Mr. Manish Sisodia and his boss Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, just weeks before the election.

Mr. Singh has been arrested on money laundering charges related to this alleged scam. Despite several attempts, including one in the Delhi High Court, his bail pleas have been turned down. In February, the High Court stated that no grounds for relief had been provided.

Mr. Singh has been granted relief by the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dipankar Datta, and Justice Prasanna B. Varale. He can be released during the pendency of the trial.

The top court has stated that the trial court is responsible for determining the terms and conditions of the release. However, what's noteworthy is that Mr. Singh can now engage in political activities, including campaigning for the AAP. This is crucial as the party may face a shortage of prominent leaders in the upcoming polls.
